KAMPALA — Government has dismissed claims that it is plotting to reintroduce any new law with regards to the regulation of LGBT activities in Uganda
Mr. Ofwono Opondo, the government spokesperson said the current provisions in the country’s Penal Code are sufficient, the situation doesn’t warrant further regulations.
Ofwono Opondo was responding to media reports that the government was secretly planning to bring back to parliament a bill called “Kill the Gays” which was rejected five years ago based on a technicality.
“Government hereby clarifies that it does not intend to introduce any new law with regards to the regulation of LGBTQ activities in Uganda because the current provisions in the Penal Code are sufficient,” Mr. Ofwono Opondo said.
However, England’s Independent Newspaper quoting Uganda’s ethics and integrity minister, Simon Lokodo, reported that the bill, which has the support of president, Yoweri Museveni, will be reintroduced in parliament in the coming weeks.
Minister was also quoted as saying Bill was expected to be voted on before the end of the year.
The paper also reported that minister Lokodo was optimistic the bill would pass with the necessary two-thirds of members present, he said, as the government had lobbied legislators ahead of its reintroduction.
