
SOMALIA — Col (Rtd) Charles Engola, the Minister of State for Defence and Members of Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs led by Hon Doreen Amule have paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Special Representative of the Chairperson of the Commission Mr Simon Mulongo in Somalia.
The MPs were briefed by the AMISOM senior eadership on activities being executed in Somalia and there afterthey proceeded to meet the Special Representative of the Secretary General in Somalia H.E Ambassador James Swan at the United Nations offices in Mogadishu.
The delegates also visited and inspected equipment used by the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU)VI after the briefing by the Commander Lt Col Nathan Bainomugisha.
The Minister and Chairperson of the committee and accompanying delegation appreciated the role Uganda People’s Defense Forces has continued to play towards the establishment of peace and security in Somalia.
Uganda was the first to deploy troops under AMISOM into Somalia in March 2007.
The Ugandan contingent remains the largest contingent in AMISOM with 6,223 troops based in Sector 1 which comprises of Banadir (Mogadishu), Middle and Lower Shabelle regions.
