KAMPALA – Police on Wednesday evening shot and injured a man who was travelling with four others in a vehicle that was allegedly trailing Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwine.
The Mercedes Benz, registration number UBF 379H, allegedly trailed Justice Bamwine’s car on its way from Kamwokya to Naguru.
At this moment, the judge’s security detail is said to have alerted Kira Road Police Station about the matter, which forced police officers to station themselves at the Kira Road traffic lights in order to flag down the vehicle.
However, when police attempted to stop the vehicle at the traffic lights at around 9pm, the driver is said to have refused and even knocked a traffic police officer as he tried to speed off towards Bukoto.
In the process, Police fired at the car’s tyres in an attempt to disable it.
The vehicle then changed course and drove to Lugogo Bypass until they stopped at The Surgery, a medical facility in Naguru, where one of the occupants had been taken for medical treatment after being shot in the fracas.
The victim who sustained a bullet wound in the back was identified as Emma Kinobe, an accountant. Kinobe was later taken to Nakasero Hospital for further treatment as he was in a critical condition.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Patrick Onyango confirmed the incident. He said four other occupants of the car were arrested and taken to Kira Road Police Station for interrogation. The case has been registered at Kira Road Police Station under SD Ref 67/16/10/2019 as well as a case of reckless driving under SD Ref 14/16/10/2019.
