RUKUNGIRI – One person has been confirmed dead, and five others injured in a Rukungiri motor accident.
The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Bernard Mujuni alias Rutagomoka, a resident of Nyabitete Cell, Rwakirungura Parish Buyanja Sub County, in Rukungiri District.
Mujuni died on Thursday morning at Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale after being involved in a Wednesday, October 9, road accident at Karegyesa road in Rukungiri town.
According to Police, a Toyota Hiace registered UBD 338B, which had been parked along Karegyesa Road in Rukungiri Municipality with five occupants, rolled off at around 0830hrs, after one of them allegedly tampered with the hand break.
The five identified as Apophia Arisiigwe 29, from Kateete Kanungu, Isaac Akimu 18 from Kyabiyonga also in Kanungu, Edison Twesigye, 32, from Kiyora Ntungamo, and two others are receiving treatment at Nyakibale Hospital.
Arisiigwe told our reporter that they saw the vehicle taking off without the driver and were thrown in confusion. “We made a lot of noise for help, until the vehicle veered off the road and hit an electric pole. That’s when I lost senses and later found myself in hospital,” she narrated.
The Rukungiri District Traffic Officer, Bannet Atwijukire says Police is still hunting for the driver of the vehicle.
“The motor vehicle driver escaped after learning of what had happened. But we have mounted a hunt for him. He will have to explain how he left the vehicle that claimed the life of an innocent Ugandan,” Mr. Atwijukire said.
A case has been opened at Rukungiri police station under file number TAR 55/2019.
