
MBARARA – The key forest managers are being trained on the use of forest monitoring data collection tools by Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) Uganda in Mbarara.
The participants include National Forestry Authority (NFA) field officers & District Forestry Officers from the South Western districts.
The training among other things focuses on practicals in forest inventory. It involved measurement of diameter (DBH) in Centimetres and total tree height meters.

The training is to equip field staff with skills in the use of available mensuration instruments to enable them monitor changes in forest cover so as to contribute data to National Forest Monitoring System. The tools include Vertex, Transponder, Diameter tape, Linear tape, Calipers and GPS among others.
The training is conducted in a phased approach according to John Begumana the programme cordinator “we started in Gulu, Masindi, now in Mbarara & next is Mbale.
