KAMPALA – Police have detained a Local Defence Unit (LDU) officer for allegedly shooting dead a man in Rubaga Division, Kampala, in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
The LDU officer identified as Abdul-Aziz Mwanjje is said to have shot dead Jimmy Ssetumba, a resident of Bunamwaya in Wakiso District, after the latter was engaged in a scuffle with a commercial sex worker.
Witnesses told this website that trouble started when Ssetumba and the sex worker started quarreling over money after emerging from a guest house in Kabuusu, Rubaga Division at around 5pm.
Ssetumba is said to have given the sex worker a big note but she refused to give him the balance. In the process, Ssetumba is reported to have grabbed her bag leading to a quarrel that reportedly lasted for about 10 minutes before he decided to walk away with the bag.
This prompted the commercial sex worker to raise an alarm, which attracted the LDUs.
The LDU officer allegedly opened fire at Ssetumba, hitting him the head.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango said the LDU officer has been charged with murder.
The incident comes a week after another LDU officer was arrested for shooting dead a civilian at Buyala under Wakiso Policing Division. Kampala Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire identified the victim as Sam Odukur, a suspect whom police had gone to arrest for assaulting his wife and the village Chairman, Musa Ssemakula. The Buyala incident came a week after another LDU killed a man who was allegedly strangling a student of Makerere University Business School (MUBS).
