KAMPALA —Makerere University has been selected to host a Ugandan edition of the Hult Prize.
Hult Prize is the world’s largest student movement for the creation of new social enterprises.
The Grand Finale, according to organizers are slated for December 9 in the Central Teaching Facility 2 (CTF 2) Auditorium.
The annual Hult Prize awards One Million US Dollars (UGX 3.8b) in start-up funding to the team of students that develops the most radical and breakthrough idea to solve one of our world’s toughest social challenges.
Building startups that have a positive impact on our planet with every dollar earned, is the year’s theme.
In partnership with the United Nations and Earth Day Network, the Hult Prize is hosting university events around the world in search of the next game-changing start-up.
Silver Walugembe will be leading the Hult Prize at Makerere University On-Campus Program and is confident that Makerere students have as good a chance as anyone to go all the way and wine this year’s Hult Prize.
“Only 20 companies are contributing to a third of the global carbon emissions, the times in which our generation lives are not ordinary times! We dwell on the interface between two worlds: A world as it is, and a world as its meant to be” says Mr. Walugembe, the Campus Director.
The winner of the intra-campus event will automatically advance to compete in one of 25 regional finals happening around the world, and then move onto a summer business accelerator, where participants will receive mentorship, advisory and strategic planning as they create prototypes and set-up to launch their new social business.
“The Guild Ministry for ICT and Research intends to promote innovations in the university with a vision to create innovations hubs at the different colleges to mentor and guide the innovators to come up with problem-solving concepts beneficial to the university, country and the world, thus, the Hult Prize” says Hon. Rodney Kiggundu, 85th Guild Minister for ICT and Research.
