
DODOMA – Tanzania is in mourning following the sudden death of Ali Mufuruki, the chairman of Wananchi Group Holdings
Mufuruki, the founder of CEO Roundtable of Tanzania (CEOrt) and Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI) East Africa died at Montnigside Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday night after a short illness while in Dar es Salaam.
CEOrt Chairman Sanjay Rughani broke the sad news on Sunday. “Dear board members: This is news I would never have wanted to break to you but our dear friend Ali Mufuruki passed on last night at Morningside Hospital, Johannesburg in South Africa,” Mr Rughani said.
Mr Rughani revealed that Mr Mufuruki fell ill while in Dar es Salaam and was rushed to The Aga Khan Hospital and was later evacuated to South Africa on Saturday afternoon.
According to the East African newspaper, Mr Mufuruki was founder of Infotech Investment Group, and formerly the chairman of Mwananchi Communications Limited, a subsidiary of the Nation Media Group. Mr Mufuruki was until recently the board chairman of Vodacom Tanzania and Wananchi Group Holdings. He also served as a trustee of the Mandela Institute for Development Studies.
He co-authored a book titled Tanzania’s Industrialisation Journey, 2016-2056. He was one of Tanzania’s richest men, with an estimated net worth of $110 million.
This comes five months after Reginald Mengi, a media mogul, entrepreneur and philanthropist, died on Thursday, 02 May 2019 in Dubai.
