KAMPALA — President Yoweri Museveni has dispelled facts on Buganda Kingdom’s history by its former Attorney General Apollo Makubuya — publicly telling him to re-research the matter.
Mr. Museveni was speaking during a recent Memorial Lecture for Edward Mutesa II held at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala.
The ceremony to commemorate Ssekabaka’s life was also attended by several dignitaries from the Central Government, religious leaders, academicians, and the Mengo Establishment.
Mr. Museveni publicly trashed Mr. Makubuya’s presentation after the former Attorney General said that Kabaka Mutesa worked for the unity of Uganda as one country among others.
Museveni attributed the challenges of Mutesa to bad advisors like Dr. Apollo Milton Obote whom he says were hypocrites.
He said that at, the beginning, the Democratic Party of late Ben Kiwanuka didn’t agree with Kabaka Yekka of Kabaka Mutesa for fronting impossible demands like Federal among others.
“I don’t know whether Makubuya you know that now? Yes, the DP didn’t agree with Kabaka Yekka. The problem was obunanfuusi bwa Obote (Obote’s hypocrisy) n’amazima ga Ben Kiwanuka (Ben Kiwanuka’s truthfulness)” he said lecturing Makubuya on his Kingdom’s history.
“That’s where the problem was, when the Mengo people were asking for this one, this one and this one, Kiwanuka said aaah, ebintu bino nga tebisobooka (those demands aren’t possible) Mr. Museveni said directing Makubuya to note that down also.
Some of the demands, Mr. Museveni said were to have in one country less two countries, “the state within a state. Makubuya, have you noted that one down?”
“Kabaka Yekka mistreated DP in Buganda for telling the truth. Do you get that one Makubuya? Makubuya should research” he said — totally rejected the presentation before asking Makubuya to research for facts.
Museveni said Mutesa was poorly advised on lost counties.
“You [Makubuya] talked of talking the truth. These counties were Bunyoro counties and there was no debate about that. Buganda had already got Buruli, Singo, Bugerere, and Buwekula. They should have left Bugangaizi and Buyaga to go back to Bunyoro,” he added.
Katikiro Charles Mayiga Mayiga collaborated with Mr. Museveni and thanked him for the recognition of Kabaka Mutebi towards the restoration of normalcy in the country and Mutesa’s struggle towards independence.
“The lecture has brought out the truth of Mutesa. Let us correct the mistakes through learning from our history,” he said.
