
KAMPALA — The project Manager Xia Nenghai, of China International Water & Electric Company, constructing the Isimba dam has revealed that 28 engineers who were meant to work on the bridge connecting Kayunga to Kamuli districts have been barred from leaving the country following the outbreak of COVID-19 commonly known coronavirus.
Nenghai made the shocking revelation today while appearing before the Physical Infrastructure Committee that is investigating claims that Shs24Bn meant for the construction of the Kayunga-Kamuli bridge on Isimba dam.
He said, “In China, we have Corona virus, we have 28people isolated, they aren’t allowed to come back. We have a very serious issue, we have less workers, no money. We want the bridge to be completed by the end of this year, how can we do it with less workers and no money. Please go through the contract, if the contract gives us the entitlement, let it be real.”
Nenghai told Parliament that the contractor has agreed to construct bridge at no additional cost no matter how much it is worth. He blamed the delay of the bridge n technical and security saying that although Uganda has lost time, the contractor will deliver the bridge by the end of 2020.
The development comes at the time latest media reports indicate that then Number of coronavirus cases have shot up to 60,000 with over 8000 in serious condition and the number of deaths recorded at 1355, and of these, 242 new coronavirus deaths were recorded in China’s Hubei Province in a single day.
