
MBALE— An inmate at Maluku Government Prison in Mbale District was on Monday shot dead after he attempted to escape.
The inmate has been identified as Mugoya Gumonye aged 20. Jolly Robert Bamutura, the officer-in-charge of Maluku government prison, on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, said Mugoya was shot in the thigh and died on spot.
Bamutura said that Mugoya was shot by a prison warder after he attempted to jump the prison fence. He has been serving a four year sentence after court convicted him of theft last year in December.
Robert Tukei, the Elgon Region Police Spokesman, confirmed the incident, saying the body was taken to Mbale Municipal Council Mortuary for a post-mortem.
Meanwhile, Police in Elgon region is holding a 26-year-old woman in connection with kidnapping a 6-year-old girl.
The woman identified as Gorret Tina Buteme is a resident of Musoto village, Bukasakya Sub County in Mbale district.
Mr Tukei said the mother of the child, Rebecca Nabuduwa, reported a case of her missing child last month at Maluku Police Post.
Tukei said that they got the child at Buteme’s home in Musoto village, Bukasakya Sub County, Mbale District.
Buteme admitted to stealing the child saying that she wanted to hoodwink her boyfriend that she was having a child. The child has been reunited with the mother.
