KAMPALA – Government has revealed plans to start the distribution of food to 1.5 million people in Kampala and Wakiso district, in a move aimed at averting hunger and starvation among the vulnerable community as the country undergoes the lockdown to avert the spread of Coronovirus.
This was disclosed by the Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda while briefing Parliament on Wednesday, April 1, on the government’s intervention on Coronavirus during today’s plenary sitting
The Prime Minister said that the food relief distribution will begin with Kampala and Wakiso with 1.5million people expected to receive the food items at village level.
Rugunda said the distrubution will start on Saturday, April 4, 2020, and the distrubution will be overseen by LC1 chairpersons under the supervision of Police and UPDF for purposes of transparency and to avoid crowds.
He told Parliament that each individual will get 6kg of maize flour, 3kg of beans and salt, while the sick and lactating persons will further receive 2kg of powdered milk and 2kg of sugar.
President Museveni defended the food distrubution writing on Twiter, “We are aware of our people that have been living hand to mouth. Unfortunately, these people have been most affected by our measures in trying to curb coronavirus spread. We shall support them until the situation returns to normal.”
