
KAMPALA – Businessman Abid Alam has understood that he will have to keep behind bars having failed to secure himself a bail.
On Friday, Buganda Road Court Grade one Magistrate Ketty Joan dismissed the Abim’s bail application on grounds that she has no legal base to grant a bail through zoom technology.
The businessman’s lawyers had appeared before the court to have the bail application heard through zoom technology connected to a laptop in Kitalya prison where the suspect is remanded.
However, the magistrate noted that the ministry of public service that urges officials to embrace technology did not indicate guidelines that came with the same.
Abim, who sought bail citing his ill health is battling charges of conspiracy.
He was earlier a lone arrested in Kampala alongside four senior police officers and taken to Buganda Road Court where they were charged before being remanded to Kitalya Maximum Security Prison in Mityana District.
According to a charge sheet, D/SP Osteen Wilber Wanyama, D/ASP Peter Baitera Muhanuza, ASP Daniel Robert Ogellan and D/SGT Wilson Azale being police officers on April 8, 2020 between Mityana Regional Police Office and Ntinda in the Kampala District conspired with Abid Alam to defeat the course of justice by unlawfully releasing confidential information in police File Case reference No. Kassanda CRB 234/ 2020 to Alam who was a suspect.
