
KAMPALA – Parliament on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 overwhelmingly voted for the creation of Terego district which will become operational on July 1.
A total of 236 MPs out of 243 voted in support of the motion tabled by Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi.
Terego district is being curved out of Arua District.
Minister Magyezi said that Terego District will have headquarters at Leju Trading Center and will have two countries; Terego East and Terego West. He said that government will make funds available for its operationalisation.
“Shs2.8b to operationalise the new district will be required in budget re-arrangement and government will look for Shs100m for startup fund” Mr Magyezi said.
The Minister promised to return to the House with a motion for the creation of Sigulu District, Hima and Katwe Districts to be curved out of Kasese, and Bughendera District to be curved out of Bundibugyo.
“The process of consultations is not yet completed, I request to return within the next 15 working days” he said.
The creation of Terego brings the number of districts in the country to 136.
