
MBARARA – In preparation for Mbarara City status which commences on July 1, 2020, the Minister of Local Government, Magyezi Raphael, on June 5, 2020 visited Mbarara District and had discussions with both Mbarara District and Mbarara Municipal Council leaders.
“By July 1, 2020 you have my guarantee these cities will begin.” Said Magyezi. He continued that the creation of cities is a historic event which needs to be celebrated.
Some of the issues raised by the leaders included: Staff structure, interim leadership, representation of Councillors and relationship between the city and the new district.
The Minister assured leaders that all these issues are being handled accordingly following the legal framework.
Magyezi tasked both Mbarara Municipal Council and Mbarara District leaders to plan for the city they want and cited that Mbarara has an advantage of being a regional capital. Hence improved service delivery such as water, security, electricity, health care, education, tourism and roads, should be given attention.
He also pointed out that with the coming of the city, some challenges such as pollution, insecurity, crime, environmental hazards and frustration will be experienced and leaders should devise means to curb them. He emphasized the need for sensitization of masses.
Magyezi commended Mbarara District Covid -19 Task Force and advised them not to relax in the fight against Covid -19.
