KAMPALA – The Online Media Publishers Association (OMPA) President Giles Muhame has condemned illegal arrest and detention of a journalist at Capital Times, a fellow online publication.
In a statement dated Thursday, June 25, Mr. Muhame noted that Mr. Ronald Nahabwe was arrested Monday, June 22, 2020 and is still being held at Police’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Kireka.
He revealed that Mr. Nahabwe was arrested in connection with a story about a confidential letter authored by a church leader.
“We demand that Nahabwe is released unconditionally and police personnel stop coercing him to reveal his sources,” reads an excerpt.
He further said that OMPA calls on the Uganda Police Force to ensure that Nahabwe has access to legal counsel, and all his other rights are respected.
“We shall remain appraised of the matter and take this opportunity to remind all Ugandans, including those in positions of authority, that Journalism is not a crime,” said Mr. Muhame.
