KAMPALA — Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) National Chairperson Wasswa Biriggwa has ended his party presidential campaign on Thursday clearing Patrick Oboi Amuriat path to the FDC nomination and a showdown with President Museveni and Bobi Wine in February 2021.
Ambassador Biriggwa first made the announcement on Thursday ahead of voting—reasoning that this is an opportunity to unify the party.
“I am allowing Patrick Amuriat Oboi to carry on this. I have found him strong and he is going to give Mr Museveni a run for his money,” Mr Biriggwa said Thursday at the FDC head offices in Najjanankumbi.
Biriggwa’s exit caps a stunning reversal of fortune following a strong performance in party joint campaigns last month.
Biriggwa said he did not make the decision lightly, describing it as a “gesture to unify the FDC”.
Mr Amuriat was then declared the FDC flag bearer by the party Electoral Commission chairman, Mr Boniface Bamwenda.
“Whereas Ambassador Biriggwa Wasswa endorsed Amuriat as the flag bearer, the commission declares honorable Amuriat Oboi Amuriat as the presidential party flag bearer of FDC party,” he said.
