KAMPALA — Makerere University Seventh Day Adventist Association has contributed up to UGX 1 million towards the restoration of the fire-ravaged Main Building at main campus in the capital.
University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe received the contribution from Members of the SDA Association, on Monday October 5.
“I thank the Makerere University Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Association for their generous contribution of UGX 1Million towards the restoration of our iconic Main Building which was destroyed by fire,” Prof. Nawangwe said.
“I am humbled by this noble gesture by our future leaders,” he said, revealing that a number of individuals and institutions have already sent in their contributions either to help restore the iconic Main Building or ensure business continuity for the affected departments.
Makerere Management last Thursday unveiled two bank accounts and an MTN MoMo Pay merchant code through which contributions to the restoration may be sent and announced that the official fundraising drive would be held at a later date.
Describing the Main Building as “our history” and “our icon”, the Vice Chancellor said a separate investigations team setup by University Council who are working with Ministry of Works is studying the structural integrity of the building.
Makerere has already received a $1m (sh3.7bn) offer from Mastercard Foundation to help rebuild the 79 year old structure.
Prof Nawangwe said more friends of Makerere promised they would be donating to help with the “complete reconstruction” of what was lost.
According to the VC, the first donation towards the restoration of the iconic administration building came from Prof. Busingye Kabumba of Makerere Law School in the sum of UGX.1 million.
“He sent his donation on Sunday morning immediately after fire had gutted the building,” Prof Nawangwe said.
Unveiling the official contribution channels for support towards the restoration of Iconic Main Administration Building the VC appealed to all well wishers to use Stanbic Bank Accounts: 9030017778608 (USD)/ 9030017778535 (UGX) for contributions.
