KAMPALA – The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially gazetted the National Unity Platform symbol of an umbrella, effectively allowing the party to use it.
“Our symbol was officially gazetted by the Electoral Commission and we can now officially use it. This is the symbol which will appear on the ballot paper against the names & images of all NUP candidates at all levels,” NUP spokesman Joel Ssenyonyi announced on Tuesday, 24 November 2020.
In August, the Uganda People’s Congress vowed not to let the Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) Party use the red colour in the forthcoming election.
Fred Ebil, the UPC Secretary General, said NUP has been illegally using the colour despite caution from the regulator [EC] but emphasised that the UPC would not relent the colour to the new party.
“We will not allow UPC to be swallowed up by another political party. We have been using red for more than 50 years now and it known as a UPC colour,” Mr Ebil said
Ebil also cautioned the new party against using the party slogan everywhere. When receiving MPs who had defected to the party on Monday, Members of the NUP chanted “NUP everywhere”. This According to Ebil is the slogan of the UPC party.
“NUP has also been using our slogan everywhere but we shall not allow this. We made a resolution as delegates to gazette our slogans and even our music to avoid infringement. Hon Kyagulanyi is an artists and understands copyright. NUP should respect the regulator, if not they face a penalty of deregistration,” Mr Ebil said.
