KAMPALA — Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has denied sacking its commissioner who reportedly handled the clearance of Bobi Wine’s armoured vehicle.
URA Spokesman Mr. Ian Rumanyika said no has been fired at the tax body but the noted that the leadership is aware of the matter.
“We are aware of this issue and are currently investigating it in accordance with our usual practices,” Mr. Rumanyika said, adding that: “Until we have concluded the investigation, we will not make any further comment”.
Mr. Rumanyika reacted after media reported indicated that URA leadership had sacked a one Jane Akello for reportedly clearing the vehicle without alerting authorities.
The reports also indicated that URA had ordered its tax enforcement team to pick up Bobi Wine’s bullet proof vehicle allegedly for tax evasion.
The UgStandard, quoting unnamed sources had reported that from Monday this week, all Motor Vehicle sections at URA that handle car registration, particularly the officers who handled Mr. Wine’s vehicle were summoned to record statements on how the car was registered and no one made an alert.
Mr. Rumanyika has since dismissed this version of the story and said no one has been sacked.
He said: “We don’t have a Commissioner called Akello, and we have never had anyone called Namuli”.
