KAMPALA —Two suspects have on Monday June 28 been charged and remanded to Kitalya State penitentiary in Wakiso District on charges of murder and attempted murder on Transport and Works Minister Gen. Katumba Wamala, his driver and daughter.
The duo including Yusuf Nyanzi and Hussein Ismail Sserubula was charged before Dr. Singiza Douglas Karekona Chief Magistrate Nakawa and remanded to Kitalya prison till August 3, 2021.
The other charges include alleged murder of Huruna Kayondo and Brenda Katumba on June 1, 2021.
“Yusuf Nyanzi , Hussein Ismael Sserubala and others still at large on June,1, 2021 at Kisaasi central Zone in Kampala district murdered Brenda Nantongo and Sgt Haruna Kayondo contrary to section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act,” the Charge sheet seen by this reads in parts.
The Chief Magistrate however didn’t allow them to plead to the charges since they face capital offences that can only be tried by the High Court.
On June 1, Gen Katumba was shot and injured in Kisaasi, a Kampala suburb, by plain clothed assailants, who were reportedly riding on motorcycles.
His daughter Brenda Nantongo and driver Haruna Kayondo died on spot.
One of the supects, Yusuf Siraje Nyanzi was in 2017 charged with the murder of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his bodyguard Kenneth Erau and driver Godfrey Mambewa before released on bail.
Nyanzi was picked up last week by security on suspicion to have been part of the assailants who on June 1 attempted to kill Gen. Katumba Wamala.
