In a rare and exciting spectacle, dog lovers and their furry friends took to the streets of Kampala on Saturday for a fun-filled dog walk event. The occasion brought together a diverse pack of local and exotic breeds, all united in their joy and enthusiasm.
Organized by Dog Walk Events Limited, the event aimed to bring together dog enthusiasts to share knowledge, expertise, and passion for their canine companions. Jordan Nsibambi, from the organizing team, explained that the walk was designed to provide a unique opportunity for socialization, exercise, and education for both dogs and their owners.
Renowned veterinary surgeon, Dr. Alex Muyingo, highlighted the importance of such events in helping dogs socialize and reduce anxiety. “Many dogs are confined to homes and lack the opportunity to interact with other dogs, leading to stress and behavioral issues. Events like this help them mix and mingle, ensuring their mental and physical well-being.”
The event also provided a platform for vaccination services against rabies, a crucial initiative in protecting both dogs and humans from this deadly disease. Sharif Ssemwanga, affectionately known as Uncle Dog, a dedicated veterinarian and dog advocate, shared his passion for educating the public on proper dog care and rescue efforts.

“My love affair with dogs began in 2008, and since then, I’ve been on a mission to make a difference in their lives. I’ve organized numerous dog walk events, bringing together furry friends and their humans, and witnessed firsthand the joy and companionship they share. But my true passion lies in rescuing troubled dogs, giving them a second chance at a happy life. There’s no greater reward than seeing a once-abandoned pup blossom into a beloved member of a loving family,” said Ssemwanga also a veterinarian.
Sergeant Herbert Nangoli, chief instructor of the police canine unit, emphasized the versatility and importance of dogs beyond being mere pets. “Dogs are invaluable assets in various specialties, including explosive detection, drug sniffing, criminal tracking, and search and rescue operations. We aim to educate the public on their numerous uses and benefits.”

The police canine unit has successfully utilized dogs in various operations, resulting in notable achievements such as the apprehension of 6843 criminals between January and May 2023. With dogs deployed in all regions, their services are available free of charge to assist in combating crime and enhancing public safety.
As the dog walk came to a close, participants left with new friendships, knowledge, and a deeper appreciation for their loyal companions. The event served as a testament to the power of dogs in bringing people together and enriching our lives.
