KAMPALA – Robert Kyagulanyi, aka, Bobi Wine has appealed to Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya not to allow to be used by opportunistic individuals wishing to gain political capital over his sickness.
According to Bobi Wine, who is also the president of National Unity Platform (NUP), all is being done to address the issue over his unpaid medical bills.
This week, Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko hosted Ssegirinya on his social media page where the latter said he had been neglected by not only parliament but also his party, NUP. Ssegirinya said the medical care he was receiving was too expensive for him to manage single-handedly.
But addressing journalists at NUP party headquarters in Kampala on Wednesday, Kyagulanyi said his party is working together with parliament to ensure that this matter is handled. He appealed to Ssegirinya not to be used by those seeking political capital to discredit his own party.
Parliament this week said it was unable to immediately be of help to Ssegirinya because he had not followed the required procedures for one to receive treatment outside the country.
It is said Ssegirinya left the country for the Netherlands without being cleared by the medical board that clears all international referrals.
“For the case of Hon Segirinya, he travelled out of the country without Medical Board clearance, without notification to the Speaker and even Leader of the Opposition,” Parliament Communications Director Chris Obore said on Monday, 21 August 2023,.
“It makes it hard for Parliament to process public funds for such a case. The handlers of Hon Segirinya have been reaching out to parliament and this procedure was explained to them. To go to social media to attract public sympathy while ignoring the law is not a good example to set. Indeed Hon Segirinya needs support but the handlers must be mindful of the law when it comes to public funds,” he added.
