
KAMPALA – Police in Kampala on Tuesday, 12 September 2023, fired teargas to disperse a group of boda boda riders who were protesting the death of their colleague.
Mr Steven Kimbowa was knocked dead by a garbage truck owned by Homelkin Company as he reportedly fled from law enforcement officers.
In response, about 100 angry riders assembled and blocked off multiple roads, including Jinja Road, Kampala Road, Yusuf Luke Road, and Mukwano Road. Subsequently, they engaged in pelting stones towards traffic officers who were managing the junction near Jinja Road traffic lights.
In response to this situation, the police swiftly intervened, resulting in the arrest of three of them.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesman Luke Owoyesigyore, two of the suspects, namely Komakech Stephen and Byamukama, are currently detained at Central Police Station Kampala , while the third suspect is being held at Jinja Road Police on allegations of unlawful assembly.
He investigations into the car incident are underway.
“The driver, identified as Atuhaire Emmy, initially left the scene but was subsequently apprehended by Kabalagala Police. Atuhaire Emmy has provided his statement regarding the events leading up to the accident,” Owoyesigyire said.
“The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident. We urge all parties involved to remain calm during this process. The deceased, Mr. Kimbowa Steven, has been transported to the City Mortuary for postmortem examination, and traffic flow in the affected areas has been normalized,” he added.
