
KAMPALA – Colonel Paddy Ankunda, a distinguished military officer and former Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson, has been appointed Assistant Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security (ACDIS-DEIA) previously known as CMI.
This strategic role oversees the Directorate of Strategic Communications, Directorate of Protocol, and Directorate of Regional Affairs, focusing on Defence Engagement and International Affairs.
Ankunda’s impressive career spans over two decades, with notable military operations in Somalia, South Sudan, Northern Uganda, and Karamoja. He assumed the UPDF spokesperson role in 2008, succeeding Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye. Recently, Ankunda excelled as the top graduate in the National Defence College’s second cohort, established by President Yoweri Museveni in 2021.
Ankunda’s educational background is equally impressive. He attended Kinyansano Primary School, Makobore High School, and Bujaga High School before earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Makerere University in 1998. His military training includes stints at Singo and Kimaka Army College in Jinja, where he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 2001.
After commissioning, Ankunda served as a Private in the Armoured Brigade in Masaka for two years. He later joined the Presidential Guard Brigade before returning to Masaka as Brigade Political Commissar.
Prior to his appointment, Ankunda served as Director of Strategic Communications. His expertise and experience make him an ideal fit for this critical role, which demands strong leadership and strategic thinking.
The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces continues to prioritize training and development. Ankunda’s appointment reflects this commitment, ensuring the UPDF remains effective in maintaining regional stability and security.
