Uganda’s Electoral Commission has been elected to the executive board of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB), a global organization promoting democratic elections.
The commission was chosen alongside Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to represent Africa on the board for a two-year term. The election took place during A-WEB’s 6th General Assembly in Bogota, Colombia.
Uganda and Kenya join representatives from Libya, Sierra Leone, and Mauritius on the board, ensuring Africa’s voice is heard in global election management discussions.
A-WEB, headquartered in South Korea, is the world’s largest international organization in election management, comprising 121 election management bodies from 111 countries. Since its establishment in 2013, A-WEB has worked to foster effective, efficient, and transparent elections worldwide.
Commissioner Peter James Emorut, representing Uganda’s Electoral Commission at the General Assembly, thanked members for their confidence. “We pledge to make a positive contribution to advancing A-WEB’s mission and vision during our tenure,” Mr. Emorut said.
A-WEB’s executive board plays a crucial role in promoting electoral best practices, capacity-building, and knowledge sharing among member states. Uganda’s membership is expected to enhance the country’s electoral processes and contribute to global efforts toward free, fair, and credible elections.
The development is seen as a significant boost to Uganda’s electoral integrity and its commitment to upholding democratic principles.
