KAMPALA – The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has initiated the restoration of the Kaliddubi Wetland System in Makindye Division, Wakiso District. This collaborative effort brings together several government institutions, including the Ministry of Water and Environment, Uganda Police Force, Uganda People’s Defence Forces, Kampala Capital City Authority, and Wakiso District Local Government.
Following extensive community sensitization exercises in surrounding villages, NEMA assessed the extent of encroachment and mapped establishments degrading the wetland system. The authority conducted awareness campaigns in areas such as Busabala, Buggu, Kibiri A & B, Kabuuma, Gangu, Lufuka, and Ndejje.
The restoration process commenced on October 1, 2024, with the removal of flower gardens, tree seedlings, and temporary structures in the Kaliddubi Wetland (Busabala Flyover section) between Munyonyo and Buggu. NEMA will continue to issue restoration orders to encroachers and undertake necessary restorations within the law.
The authority urges affected communities to peacefully vacate the wetlands to avoid confrontation with law enforcers. NEMA remains committed to working closely with stakeholders to address individual concerns and foster harmonious restoration exercises across the country.
In addition to the Kaliddubi Wetland restoration, NEMA is also working on restoring other wetlands, including Lubigi, Nambigirwa, and those in rural areas. These efforts aim to enforce the National Environment Act, Cap. 181, and relevant regulations, which prohibit wetland encroachment and degradation.
By restoring Uganda’s wetlands, NEMA seeks to protect the environment, promote sustainable development, and ensure a healthier future for all citizens.
