KAMPALA, UGANDA – Uganda’s communications regulator has issued a stern warning to broadcasters, threatening tough sanctions against those airing explicit content.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) says it has noticed a surge in obscene and indecent material on local television and radio stations, despite previous warnings.
“Broadcasters must ensure that their content complies with the Minimum Broadcasting Standards and content regulations,” UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo said.
Mr. Thembo cautioned that non-compliant broadcasters face suspension, fines, or even license revocation.
“The UCC will not hesitate to take action against any broadcaster that fails to comply with the regulations,” he added.
The commission has previously issued guidelines on content classification, emphasizing the need to protect children from harmful material.
Broadcasters are now required to ensure that all content, including music videos and audios, is properly classified by the Media Council before being aired.
Industry insiders say the UCC’s warning is a response to growing public concern over explicit content on Ugandan airwaves.
The UCC’s tough stance is seen as part of broader efforts to regulate Uganda’s broadcasting sector and promote decency on the airwaves.
