KAMPALA – A shocking scandal has rocked Uganda’s diplomatic corps as a top envoy has been expelled from the United Kingdom amidst allegations of running a personal human trafficking ring. The envoy, who served at the Ugandan Mission to the UK, allegedly smuggled Ugandan women into the country under the guise of hiring domestic workers, only to exploit and sell them into domestic servitude.
The expulsion follows months of surveillance by British intelligence, which culminated in the dramatic escape of one trafficked woman. She exposed the envoy’s fraudulent work papers, leading to the swift expulsion. The envoy has vehemently denied the allegations, labeling them “concocted and full of falsehoods.”
However, sources within Uganda’s Foreign Affairs ministry have corroborated the disturbing allegations, revealing a pattern of exploitation that has brought shame to the nation’s diplomatic corps. The envoy’s actions have raised grave concerns about the conduct of Ugandan diplomats abroad and the need for greater accountability.
This incident is merely the latest in a string of scandals involving Uganda’s foreign missions. Recently, Ugandan diplomats in Dubai were implicated in an illegal gambling operation within the consulate. This led to the recall of the envoy involved. Furthermore, Uganda’s envoy to Canada, Joy Ruth Acheng, was declared persona non-grata by the Canadian government in August.
Other diplomatic embarrassments have tarnished Uganda’s reputation, including:
Money laundering allegations in Abuja and Algiers,
Embezzlement allegations in New York
Tax evasion in Kinshasa, and
Mysterious fires at Uganda’s Embassy in Nairobi
These incidents underscore the urgent need for greater accountability, transparency, and oversight within Uganda’s diplomatic ranks. The nation’s reputation, diplomatic relationships, and integrity are at stake.
The Ugandan government must take swift and decisive action to address these allegations, ensure that those responsible are held accountable, and implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
