KAMPALA – NUP Head of Mobilization, Chairman Nyanzi Fred, has finally been released after four agonizing days of incommunicado detention. His ordeal began on Monday, February 17, 2025, when he was abducted by heavily armed men at Kubbiri Roundabout in Mulago, Kampala.
Eyewitnesses claim that Nyanzi was taken away in a drone vehicle to an undisclosed location. The National Unity Platform (NUP) President, Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, broke the news of Nyanzi’s abduction on social media, condemning the act and accusing the government of being behind the kidnapping.
Nyanzi’s detention followed a pattern similar to other opposition figures and activists who have reportedly been kidnapped by security operatives in Uganda. The government has been accused of using illegal detentions and enforced disappearances to silence dissent.
Nyanzi was on Friday evening driven back to his home and dumped. His release was met with relief from his family, friends, and colleagues, who had been demanding his safe release.
