The Democracy Union of Africa (DUA) has strongly condemned the continued detention of Dr. Kizza Besigye, a leading opposition figure in Uganda, despite a Supreme Court ruling ordering his immediate release.
According to Louisa Atta-Agyemang, Chairperson of the DUA, “The persistent refusal by Ugandan authorities to abide by these fundamental principles is both disturbing and unacceptable. The arbitrary detention and mistreatment of Dr. Besigye is a direct violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Basic Principles for the Treatment of Prisoners”.
Dr. Besigye, a former Chairman of the DUA, has been detained under questionable circumstances since his abduction from Kenya in November 2024. He faces charges of treason and unlawful possession of firearms, which remain contested. The Supreme Court’s ruling, which nullified the use of military courts for civilian trials, has not been implemented, raising concerns over the Ugandan government’s disregard for the rule of law and judicial authority.
Louisa emphasized that “the Ugandan government’s actions are not only a violation of Dr. Besigye’s rights but also an attack on the principles of democracy and human rights. We call on the government to respect the rights and dignity of Dr. Besigye and ensure he receives fair treatment in accordance with both Ugandan law and global human rights standards”.
The DUA has urged international human rights experts, civil society organizations, and the global community to closely monitor the situation. Louisa warned that “the continued incarceration of Dr. Besigye represents an attack on human rights everywhere. We must stand together to defend the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law”.
The DUA has also expressed concern for Dr. Besigye’s health, which continues to deteriorate under detention. Louisa stated that “it is clear that his situation is life-threatening, and immediate medical intervention from a team of independent specialists is crucial. We demand that the Ugandan government provide Dr. Besigye with the necessary medical care and attention”.
The DUA has reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of human rights, justice, and the rule of law. Louisa concluded that “we will continue to follow this matter to the very end, and we will not rest until Dr. Besigye is released and his rights are respected”.
