KAMPALA – The health of Uganda’s opposition leader, Dr. Kizza Besigye, has taken a concerning turn, prompting an outpouring of prayers and well-wishes from supporters and well-wishers.
According to his lawyer, Erias Lukwago, Dr. Besigye was rushed to a private medical facility in Bugoloobi via ambulance after his health condition suddenly deteriorated.
On Saturday, The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) issued a pressing call for the immediate release of Dr. Kizza Besigye, due to his deteriorating health condition. According to reports and disturbing visuals from his recent court appearance, Dr. Besigye’s health has significantly worsened, signaling an urgent need for specialized medical intervention.
The UMA emphasizes that healthcare is a human right, as declared by the Uganda constitution, and that Dr. Besigye is entitled to the highest standard of healthcare available, without discrimination, even under detention. This is in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the World Medical Association’s Declaration of Tokyo.
“The Uganda Medical Association is deeply concerned about the health and well-being of Dr. Kizza Besigye,” said Dr. Mirembe Joel, Secretary General of the UMA. “As medical professionals, we are duty-bound to advocate for the rights of all individuals to access quality healthcare, regardless of their political affiliation or circumstances of detention.”
Dr. Mirembe Joel added, “We urge the authorities to facilitate Dr. Besigye’s immediate medical release, ensuring comprehensive medical assessment, continuous health monitoring, and adherence to international human rights standards. The UMA stands in solidarity with Dr. Besigye and his family, emphasizing the urgency of this situation and the non-negotiable nature of his health and human rights.”
Dr. Besigye, 68, has been in detention since November 2024, facing multiple charges, including illegal possession of firearms and threatening national security. His detention has sparked international condemnation, with many viewing it as politically motivated.
The UMA’s call for Dr. Besigye’s release is based on the principles of medical ethics and human rights. The association is committed to advocating for the health and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their circumstances.
“We cannot stand by and watch as Dr. Besigye’s health continues to deteriorate in detention,” said Dr. Mirembe Joel. “We urge the authorities to take immediate action to ensure his access to quality healthcare and to respect his human rights.”
The UMA’s press release has been signed by various officials, including Dr. Herbert Luswata, President of the UMA, Dr. Mirembe Joel, Secretary General, and other members of the association’s leadership.
The association has called upon the authorities, including the President, judiciary, prisons, parliament, and executive, to take immediate action to address Dr. Besigye’s health concerns and to respect his human rights.
