The family of Mr. John Cossy Odomel is in mourning following the passing of the distinguished former Inspector General of Police and beloved father. Mr. Odomel passed away on the morning of Tuesday, February 18, 2025, in India, at the age of 69.
Abbas Byakagaba, the incumbent IGP of Uganda Police, expressed his deep sadness at the news, saying, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Cossy Odomel, former Inspector General @PoliceUg, (1992-1998) a distinguished member of Uganda Police Force who dedicated many years of service and leadership to our organization.”
Byakagaba extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and acknowledged Mr. Odomel’s invaluable contributions to the Uganda Police Force, which will forever be remembered ¹.
Mr. Odomel had a remarkable career, serving as IGP from 1992 to 1998. During his tenure, he was recognized for his efforts to professionalize the police force, making it more technocratic and efficient. He was also awarded the Exemplary Service Medal Class One in 2010 for his service to the police.
After retiring from the police force, Mr. Odomel ventured into politics, contesting the Pallisa County parliamentary seat in 2001. Although he was unsuccessful in his bid, he remained a respected figure in Ugandan politics.
Captain Mike Mukula, the National Resistance Movement Vice Chairperson for Eastern Region, also mourned the passing of Mr. Odomel, hailing him as “our patriot” in a social media post.
The family has announced that details of the burial arrangements will be communicated in due course, and relatives, friends, and in-laws are hereby informed. May Mr. John Cossy Odomel’s soul rest in eternal peace.
