KAMPALA – A group of five women, including Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, failed to appear in court due to a lack of clothing.
The women, who were arrested during the Free Besigye protests in Kampala, were supposed to appear before Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya for a ruling on their bail application. However, they declined to appear via Zoom, citing concerns about appearing virtually without proper attire.
The women were remanded to prison last week on Wednesday for their involvement in protests demanding the release of Dr. Kizza Besigye, who remains detained at Luzira Maximum Security Prison.
They face charges of public nuisance after allegedly placing themselves on Ben Kiwanuka street in a manner that caused danger or inconvenience to traffic.
The court has issued a production warrant for March 10, hoping that the women will have arranged for clothes to be brought to them by then.
According to the letter sign by this publication that was signed by the Officer in charge of the Luzira women prison, SP Stella Salume Atoo, the group refused to dress appropriately in the given clothes and wanted to dress indecently by tying a lesu around their chest, something that can not be promoted.
“They accordingly refused to go to court and it is on this grounds that I sent a staff with the warrants for your onwards actions,” reads in part the letter.
Dr. Besigye and his aide, Haji Obedi Lutale, have been on remand at Luzira prison since November last year, charged with security-related offenses and later treachery.
