KAMPALA – The Ministry of Works and Transport (MOWT) has announced plans to undertake crucial pavement improvement and preventative drainage works along the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway. The project, slated to commence on February 26, 2025, aims to address the long-standing issue of underground water seepage, which has been weakening the road surface and causing deterioration to the pavement layers.
According to the Permanent Secretary, Bageya Waiswa, the affected sections include the Exit Ramp at Kajjansi towards the Old Entebbe Road, and at Kilometre 17+000 near the Pepsi Cola factory (Busega Mpala section).
“The works will involve installing subsurface drains to remove water from beneath the pavement, milling and resurfacing of the affected area, and using edge kerbs to control surface water and direct it to proper drainage channels,” Waiswa explained.
The Design and Build Contractor, China Construction and Communications Company Ltd (CCCC), has been notified to respond to these defects under the warranty guarantee obligation in favour of the Government of Uganda.
To minimize disruptions, the contractor has been instructed to implement effective traffic management measures on site, ensuring smooth traffic flow and continuity throughout the intervention period. The project is expected to be completed within 14 days, by March 12, 2025.
Waiswa apologized for the inconvenience caused and appreciated the public’s patience. “We understand the importance of this expressway and the impact of these works on the daily commute. We assure the public that we will do everything possible to minimize disruptions and ensure the works are completed as scheduled,” he said.
Motorists and road users are advised to exercise caution and follow traffic guidelines during the construction period. The Ministry of Works and Transport will provide regular updates on the project’s progress.
