Kampala, Uganda – The Electoral Commission Uganda met with police chiefs at the commission’s headquarters on Seventh Street Industrial Area to discuss the upcoming Kampe Division North by-election, scheduled to take place on March 13, 2025.
According to Julius Mucunguzi, spokesperson for the Electoral Commission Uganda, the meeting focused on ensuring a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere during the campaign process.
“The commission has always maintained that an election is not a war, and it should be a peaceful exercise that enables the people to choose their leaders,” Mucunguzi said. “Today’s discussion essentially focused on how we can work with the police to ensure peace and security during this electoral process, without descending into confrontation.”
Mucunguzi emphasized the need for all actors involved in the by-election process, including candidates, supporters, and the media, to follow the guidelines issued by the commission to prevent any form of confrontation or provocation.
Meanwhile, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, visited injured persons who were involved in a scuffle during a campaign rally. In a statement, Bobi Wine condemned the violence and assured the injured persons that their sacrifices would not be in vain.
“We spent part of the day visiting some of our comrades who were terribly injured by security forces yesterday,” Bobi Wine said. “Some of these are in hospitals, while others are recovering from their homes. You cannot imagine how these thugs aimed live bullets and rubber bullets at unarmed civilians and cut some of them using knives and bayonets.”
Bobi Wine assured the injured persons that there would be accountability for the crimes committed against them.
“We gave them a message of encouragement and assured them that their sacrifices will never be in vain,” Bobi Wine said. “Surely, there will be accountability for these crimes against humanity, one way or another.”
The Electoral Commission Uganda has urged all stakeholders to maintain peace and calm during the by-election.
