Uganda’s Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is facing criticism for its slow pace in handling cases transferred from the General Court Martial.
The Supreme Court annulled the trial of civilians in military courts nearly a month ago, but the DPP’s office has yet to receive all the necessary files.
George William Byansi, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, told MPs that his office was still waiting for the files, and could not provide an update on the number of cases involved.
The delay has sparked concerns about the fate of civilians who were tried in military courts. MPs have demanded that the DPP provides a comprehensive update on the status of these cases.

“We need to know how many people are affected, and what is being done to ensure justice is served,” said Muwanga Kivumbi, Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee.
The issue has raised questions about the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law, and ensuring that civilians are not tried in military courts.
The DPP’s office has promised to provide an update on the cases, but has not given a timeline for when this will happen.
