KAMPALA – A devastating downpour in Kampala early Wednesday morning has left a trail of destruction, claiming the lives of five people, including two infants. The intense rainfall, which lasted for several hours, caused severe flooding, sweeping away pedestrians, triggering motor accidents, and damaging properties across the city.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police, three bodies were recovered from the Kinawataka area, while two children, Otim Kisa Eliza (3 years old) and Ochaka Chon (11 months old), drowned in their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto. The mother, Lenunu Rose Mary, has been arrested on allegations of negligence after neighbors reported that she had locked the children inside the house while she went about her work.
“We urge the public to take precautionary measures during heavy rains to prevent accidents. Our rescue teams remain on the ground, assessing the situation and providing necessary assistance,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Owoyesigyire emphasized the importance of community vigilance, saying, “We extend our deepest condolences to the affected families and urge the public to remain vigilant during this rainy season.”
The police have also advised:
- Avoiding Unnecessary Movement: Refrain from moving around during downpours to prevent accidents.
- Boda Boda Rider Safety: Riders are advised not to risk crossing flooded roads and to wait until water levels recede for safe passage.
- Securing Homes and Children: Residents should ensure their homes are secure and take extra precautions to safeguard children during extreme weather conditions.
Rescue teams are still on the ground, assessing the situation and providing necessary assistance. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to the City Mortuary, Mulago, for postmortem examination.
