KAMPALA – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has rejected the results of the Kawempe North constituency by-elections, citing widespread violence, voter intimidation, and alleged rigging.
According to the Independent Electoral Commission, the National Unity Platform’s candidate won the by-election with 17,764 votes, while the NRM candidate garnered 8,593 votes.
However, the NRM’s Secretary General, Richard Todwong, disputed the results, stating that the electoral process was marred by violence and intimidation.
“We cannot accept these results because the electoral process was compromised,” Todwong said. “Our supporters were brutalized, and many were intimidated from casting their votes.”
Todwong also condemned the excessive use of force by security personnel, which resulted in the injury of several voters, including journalists.
“We apologize to those Ugandans who were caught in the crossfire of provoked excessive use of force by security personnel,” Todwong said. “The government is investigating these incidents, and those responsible will be held accountable.”
The NRM’s Central Executive Committee, chaired by President Yoweri Museveni, resolved to legally challenge the results, citing irregularities and electoral malpractices.
As the NRM prepares to challenge the results, Todwong assured the country that the party would continue to advocate for free and fair elections.
“We will not relent in our pursuit of electoral justice,” Todwong said. “The people of Kawempe North deserve a free and fair election, and we will ensure that their voices are heard.”
