Two senior leaders of the Uganda Liberal Teachers’ Union SACCO, Chairperson Mutesasira Evans Kaganizo and Secretary General Esiingwa Hassan Maganda, have been taken to court and sent to Luzira prison for allegedly swindling 2.7 billion shillings from SACCO members.
The duo claimed they were buying 500 acres of land, but investigations revealed the land didn’t exist and actually belonged to the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit arrested the pair after complaints surfaced about their misuse of the 6.6 billion shillings President Museveni allocated to improve teachers’ welfare.
Investigations found that they withdrew the money from the SACCO’s Equity Bank account and used it to buy a house in Kira and a Toyota Hilux at an inflated price without approval from members.
Mutesasira and Esiingwa face charges of obtaining money by false pretenses, committed between November and December 2024.
Despite denying the charges before the presiding Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi of Buganda Road Court, the duo have been remanded to Luzira prison until March 19th, for the hearing of their bail application.
