Kampala, Uganda – Six suspects arrested by the National Forestry Authority (NFA) for their alleged involvement in illegal forestry activities in Mabira Central Forest Reserve (CFR) have been remanded to prison until April 14, 2025.
The suspects, Twalik Mugabo and Sebufu Edrisa, were charged with unlawful possession of timber and charcoal obtained illegally from Mabira CFR on March 22, 2025, in Bulengeza village, Mukono district.
The other four suspects, including NFA patrolmen Mwebaze David and Twanamatsiko Winston, forest supervisor Ecima Joseph, and police officer Pc. Kipsanga Albert, were charged with neglect of duty for allegedly failing to protect Mabira CFR from illegal activities.
All six suspects pleaded “Not Guilty” and were remanded to prison pending their next court appearance on April 14, 2025, for hearing and bail application.
This development comes amid ongoing efforts by the NFA to crack down on illegal forestry activities in Uganda’s protected areas. In recent months, the NFA has arrested several individuals involved in illegal timbering, charcoal burning, and other forest-related crimes.
