
NTUNGAMO – Police in Ntungamo are investigating circumstances under which a former journalist attached to Endigyito Radio, a Mbarara-based radio station, was killed by her boyfriend inside a canteen where she worked in broad-daylight.
The body of Ms Christine Niwamanya, 28, was recovered inside the back-room of the canteen where she worked a few yards from the gate of Ntungamo District headquarters.
Police says the suspected killer attempted to commit suicide after the incident but was rescued by co-workers before the poison, he took, left severe impacts.
The Ntungamo District Police commander, Mr Katwesiime Damian, confirmed the incident, adding that police is following clues to arrest the suspect who tried to commit suicide but was rescued by friends after committing the murder.
He said the incident happened on Monday, August 26, at around 5:00 pm and the body of Ms Christine was recovered 30 minutes after the murder as a person who had come to the canteen to buy airtime called with no one replying.
The canteen where Christine worked “serves the Ntungamo Magistrate’s court and the district headquarters”.
Eyewitnesses say they saw the suspect leaving his office, East Africa Natural resources Limited (a company that deals in minerals) where he worked as a laboratory assistant just adjacent the canteen where the murder took place, move into the canteen where Ms Christine was and later emerging and going back to the offices.
“We saw Warugaba coming to his fiancée’s canteen after which he returned to the office. Shortly after news emerged that the lady has been strangled,” eyewitnesses narrating the suspected killer’s movements.
Police report indicated that “Ms Christine was strangled to death”.
Mr Katwesiime says police is working with the employers of Mr Morris Warugaba, the East Africa Natural Resources Limited, the suspected killer to have him apprehended and charged with murder as they investigate circumstances leading to her death.
