RUKUNGIRI – A couple was on Friday night robbed of UGX 6.8 million by unidentified gunmen.
The victims have been identified as John Mutusi aged 30 and his wife Phionah Amutuheire, who are both residents of Bunura village, southern Division, in Rukungiri municipality.
The incident occurred on Friday night August 16, at around 8 pm at Bunura village.
According to Mutusi, they were happily retiring from their shop in Rukungiri daily market when two people armed with an AK 47 rifle waylaid them in their home compound.
Mr. Mutusi says that as he and Amutuheire got out of their pick-up truck, registration number UAU 276B to open the garage, gunmen emerged from the banana plantation and put them on gunpoint.
Mr. Mutusi narrated that they were ordered to lie down and face the ground as gunmen ransacked their pockets and the entire vehicle.
“As soon as I got out of the vehicle in my compound to open the garage, two men emerged from the banana plantation and pointed a gun at me, they ordered me and my wife to face the ground,” Mutusi narrated.
“The ordeal lasted for around forty minutes facing the ground in fear of losing our lives” Mutesi added.
Mutusi says that gunmen whom one of them was donning a Khaki Uniform and a green jacket while another donning a pair of spotted short and a jumper made off with shillings 6.8 million, two mobile phones and an Ignition key of the vehicle.
He says that as they to tried to get up from the ground about 20 minutes after the incident, they became more frightened when they found one of the robbers still pointing a gun at them and ordering them not to make any alarm.
The police spokesperson for Kigezi region Elly Maate has confirmed the incident saying that though police Canine dog was shushed to the scene of crime, it could not trace the gunmen.
Maate says that efforts are being made to trace the gunmen since preliminary investigations indicates that Mutusi’s fellow traders could be having knowledge of this gruesome theft.
