KAMPALA – Police working with the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) say they have arrested another prime suspect in the double kidnap and murder of Maria Nagirinya Gateni, a social worker, and her driver, Kitayimbwa Ronald in August this year.
Nagirinya and Kitayimbwa were kidnapped on August 28, outside her home in Lungujja, on the outskirts of Kampala, and later killed and dumped in Nama Sub-county, Mukono District.
And now police say they have arrested Sharif Mpaga aka Shafik, who is said to have transported the killers of Nagirinya and Kitayimbwa to the former’s home on a motorcycle and then waited for them to facilitate their escape. Shafik is also said to have surveyed the place in Mukono where the deceased’s bodies were dumped.
“I am happy to inform you that the whole group involved in the double kidnap has been arrested,” Mr Fred Enanga, the police spokesman, told journalists in Kampala on Monday, October 07, 2019.
“The suspect is being interrogated by our officers over his role,” he added.
Shafik’s arrest brings to six the number of people arrested over the murder. Mr Enanga said one of the key suspects, Sadat Kateregga, is also being interrogated after he is said to have masterminded the double murder.
Nagirinya was a project coordinator for Community Integrated Development Initiative – CIDI, based in Muyenga along Tank Hill road. On the fateful day, she had been awarded a certificate alongside 65 others workers after completing a three days workshop.
