
RUKUNGIRI – Rukungiri Police has started investigations into the death of a former student at Makerere College of Business and Computer Studies in Western Division Rukungiri Municipality.
Crescent Ahereza, 23, died on Monday Dec 2. A source within the college who preferred anonymity said Ahereza who finished his UBTEB exams in mechanics and driving on November 29, was beaten to pulp by students who found him red in their hall of residence on December 1.
The students allegedly led Ahereza to his rented room in the neighbourhood where they found some items he had allegedly stolen from them.
Ahereza mentioned a one Kenneth Niwenyesiga a first-year student offering Accountancy, as being part of the group that was involved in stealing from students at the college. The students then apprehended Niwenyesiga and beat him too.
The Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, Elly Maate says the college Director; Rev. Ronald Natuhwera reported a case of theft against the duo on Monday morning but was advised to take Ahereza for treatment since he was in bad condition.
Natuhwera who is also the head of development at the North Kigezi Diocese took Ahereza to Rukungiri Health Centre IV where he died on the same day at around 3:00pm.
Maate says that George Mbihweireho, 70, the chairperson LC1 of Rwamunyinya cell, Masya Parish in Nyakagyeme Sub County Rukungiri District reported a case of murder at Rukungiri Police Station.
Maate added that Police has already started investigations to establish who was behind this mob action.
“As police we condemn the acts of mob justice. We have always encouraged the public to use relevant offices in case they have issues, we shall therefore apprehend whoever was involved so that justice is fulfilled,” he said.
By Monday evening, Ahereza’s body was still in the mortuary pending post-mortem, while Rev. Natuhwera was in Police cells, although he declined to comment on the matter.
