
KASESE – Kasese municipal council Speaker, Mr Alex Kwatampora has joined the fray to take up the representation for workers in parliament in the coming general elections.
Mr. Kwatampora, 49, the councilor representing Bulembia division in Kasese municipal council is battling with more than 8 workers who will compete for the four slots in parliament.
Among those in the race include; Aston Arianitwe Rwakajara (MP), Charles Bakkabulindi (MP), Dr. Sam Lyomoki (MP), Ms. Agatha Namirembe, one Mr. Wanyama and Wilson Owere of Notu.
Mr. Kwatampora is the National Chairman for Urban Speakers of Uganda and National Vice chairman Western Region-Workers (NRM) and has declared his long-awaited intentions to contest for the position of workers MP 2021-2026.
Kwatampora is known for being active workers representative and says he pushed for the District Workers Councilors representation and actively got involved in the new workers bill amendment consultations.
“I am an advocate for NSSF savings to be used as collateral to those who so wish to access Bank loans instead of people failing to take their children to school because of lack of collateral in the banks, build shelters, advocated and still advocating for adequate and acceptable treatment of our young Ugandans employed abroad especially in the Middle East, minimum wage, recognition of outstanding workers representatives and for workers SACCOS,” Mr. Kwatampora said.
He is a strong promoter of artisanal miners (commonly referred to as illegal miners) co-existence with licensed mining companies who usually find them earning a living and kind of disagree on how to co-exist.
Workers’ MPs have been elected under the Parliamentary Elections (Special Interest Groups) Regulations of 2001, which were amended in 2011 under the Parliamentary Elections (Special Interest Groups) (Amendment) Regulations No. 6 of 2011. Under the said Regulations: The representatives of workers in Parliament shall be elected in accordance with the Constitutions of the two registered federations of labor unions namely; the National Organization of Trade Unions (NOTU) and the Central Organization of Free Trade Unions (COFTU) by their extraordinary delegates’ conferences whose composition shall be that of their annual delegates’ conferences under the relevant articles of the Constitutions of the respective federations of labor unions forming electoral colleges as prescribed by this regulation.
Kwatampora has a MSc Geoscience (Geotechnical Engineering), Bsc (hons) Mining & Engineering Geology, Dip Earth Science (Eng Geology & Seismology). Dip. Mineral Resources Exploration, Geographical Information System (GIS) & Remote Sensing. He studied in Uganda, S. Africa, Egypt, Lesotho, Austria, Germany, Finland, South Korea and China.
He is the current District Chairman – Kasese (NRM) Workers league and also worked as the Executive Director/Lead Geological-Geotech Consultant – Mpora Geo-Tech Consultants Ltd, former Project Manager – Kilembe Mines Concession from 2013 – 2017, Engineering Geologist/Geotech Engineer – Fichtner of Germany, Engineering Geologist and Material Quality Control Engineer – Bujagali Hydropower Project, Isimba Hydropower Project, Geological and Geotechnical Engineering Consultant in different companies, Project Coordinator, Senior Geologist, Geotech Supervisor – Kilembe Mines Ltd in the past years from 1992 – 2006.
