KAMPALA – The National Unity Platform (NUP) has selected a new party flag bearer for the Kasese Municipality MP seat following a review.
NUP supporters in Kasese had rejected the party vetting committee’s decision to select Amina Kahindo as the flag bearer, arguing that Sam Baluku, who is the district party coordinator, is more popular.
And now it has emerged that NUP has now declared Baluku the official party flag bearer.
Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP National spokesperson, confirmed the move, saying it was taken after making some re-evaluations following petitions that were presented to the vetting committee. A number of flag bearers have been changed and more changes are expected according to communication from NUP.
District party registrar Samuel Masereka is also quoted by URN as saying that they had received a communication from the party head office indicating that Baluku had been re-considered for the flag.
He said the district party leadership was ready to follow any changes deemed fit for the party ahead of the general elections.
The disgruntled party supporters stormed NUP offices at Nyakasanga Division in Kasese municipality on Sunday to express their dissatisfaction. The group comprising over 50 party supporters mostly youths said it was unfair for the committee to leave out people who have fought tooth and nail to establish NUP in Kasese.
Since releasing the lists of selected flag bearers for MP and local government positions including Lord Mayor, Division Mayors and Councillors, many NUP supporters have expressed discontent over the way the vetting exercise was done.
Some leaders, who were denied the NUP ticket, have vowed to contest as independents.
They include Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleon for the Kampala Lord Mayor seat and Moses Kasibante (Rubaga Nother incumbent MP).
