KAMPALA The Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in the Uganda Police Force, Ms Grace Akullo, is currently embroiled in a better wrangle with an army officer at the rank of a Brigadier over her refusal to grant bond to two of his sons implicated in the theft of 500,000 dollars (about Shs1.9 billion) from a forex bureau, PML Daily exclusively reports.
Senior police sources investigating the matter have told this website that the theft of the money in question came last Thursday after it was given to Lillian Nanyanzi and Joy Katenta, both staff of Metropolitan Forex Bureau, to bank it in Bank of Africa, Jinja Road branch.
However, the staff are said to have instead entered the bank’s toilets and shared the money. They staff were captured on CCTV footage obtained from BOA, entering the toilet.
When the staff failed to return to the forex bureau, the management are said to have rushed to police and reported a case of theft. Police then launched a manhunt for the duo but are said to have intercepted telephone conversations between Nanyanzi and the Brigadier’s sons.
According to sources at CID, Nanyanzi took $250,000 (Shs900 million) and gave the rest to the Brigadier John Mulindwa’s sons so as to bribe police detectives to silence and kill the case.
Police then managed to arrest Brigadier Mulindwa’s sons on Tuesday and are holding them at Kampala Central Police Station. However, Nanyanzi’s whereabouts are unknown.
When the Brigadier got wind of his children’s arrest, he on Tuesday stormed Kampala Central Police Station, demanding their release. However, he was frustrated after the police detectives received a directive from the no-nonsense CID Boss Akullo, demanding that they should not be released. This is said to have incensed Brig Mulindwa who has since been seen pacing up and down the corridors of CPS, seeking for bond of his children.
Akullo, who is known for her hard stance towards crime, has reportedly refused to meet Mulindwa in a bid to resolve the matter.
The evidence in the case is that police have reportedly recovered the Shs900m from the boys and have alerted all border points and police stations countrywide as they seek to arrest Nanyanzi, who detectives believe is hiding in Kampala. The sons are said to have attempted to bribe the detectives with 20,000 dollars to no avail.
