FOOTBALL–Uganda cranes interim boss Moses Basena has named what may be his last squad for the game against Congo Brazzaville next month.
The former Cranes defender is poised not to be named the full time coach after FUFA decided to accept applications for the role early this week.
The Cranes job fell vacant in July after Serbian Milutin Sredjovic “Micho” decided to terminate his contract sighting unfavourable working conditions and salary arrears not taken care of.
Basena who was his assistant was tasked with heading the Cranes on interim basis and has over seen Cranes play five competitive games in both the World cup qualifiers and those of CHAN where the Cranes have won two, drawn one and two in the process thus qualifying for the CHAN tournament in Morocco early next year.
The team that was announced on Wednesday afternoon includes some surprise additions as Proline’s David Owori makes the 28 man team that is expected to be trimed to 23 by match day.
Owori has featured prominently for the Lugogo based side scoring two of the six his side have managed so far this season.
Others that have made the squad unexpectedly include SC Villa duo of Joseph Nsubuga and Ibrahim Kiyemba who have been away from the Cranes set up for a while with Kiyemba’s last game coming in 2015 against Nigeria in an international friendly.
Ondupararaka’s vice captain Gardinho Ghadafi, Kirinya’s Allan Kyambadde and Police duo of Albert Migisa and Hood Kaweesa are in line for a World cup qualifiers debut too after being included.
Cranes forwards William Kizito Luwaga and Farooq Miya have not been included in the squad and with the CHAN championships around the corner, it is fair to say that Basena had the tournament in which only locally based players are allowed in mind.
Other notable omissions include Khalid Aucho, Tony Mawejje and goalkeeper Robert Odongkara.
Cranes are second in group E, four points behind leaders Egypt with a single game to play.
The other group E fixture will see Ghana hosting Egypt in Kumasi on the same day
