Ugandan Chess star Phiona Mutesi’s continues to shine thanks to her impeccable talent. She is referred to as the “College Chess Star” at her University, NorthWest. Ending last year, she led her Chess Team into winning a trophy in the Top Small College Team category.
It’s on record that her life story was showcased in the Disney movie, “Queen of Katwe” hence that’s when she made her bigger step to fame. Phiona is currently a first year student at American, North West University. She has however already managed to turn heads, together with her colleague, and fellow freshman, Ben Mukumbya.
According to a tweet from Deborah Malac, US Ambassador to Uganda indicates that indeed this champion has made the country proud.
“Congratulations to Phiona Mutesi, the star of “Queen of #Katwe,” for helping lead her Northwest University #Chess Team to victory in Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Championships! Great to see young #Ugandan#women succeeding! @northwestu,” she wrote.
From sources, we learnt that Phiona’s university managed to get the trophy with a 4-0 win against previous champion, Oberlin College. The later had won the said trophy for the previous four years.
Other colleges that participated in the competition innclude; Columbia University, Arizona State University, Tecnológico Nacional de México, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Oberlin College, and University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. They finally emerged successful.
